Met Gala Returns to Traditional Spot on First Monday in May | Entertainment News

NEW YORK (AP) — Well, hello first Monday in May.

The year’s biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala, returns to its usual berth on the social calendar this year after pandemic upheaval. And if it feels like one of those what, already moments, it is.

It’s been just under eight months since the last gala, an annual fundraiser that raises eight-figure sums for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Pre-pandemic, about 600 A-listers from fashion, sports, music, film, TV, technology and beyond were invited. This year and last, the numbers were closer to 400. The 2020 gala was canceled.

More than $16.4 million was raised last year. The starry event is the institute’s primary budget feeder.

This year’s gala coincides with the opening of the second part of a two-part exhibit at the Costume Institute focused on American fashion and style.

From retail to styling for the Met Gala: Lancaster native Manny Jay soars in the world of fashion | Entertainment

Emmanuel Colon had just two weeks to style a Met Gala look for one of his longest-term clients, beauty influencer and entrepreneur Jackie Aina, when her invitation to the gala arrived late.

It was the first time he styled someone for fashion’s biggest event, held this year on Sept. 13. The theme was “American Independence,” a theme that could vary drastically given the person in attendance.

Aina decided to pay homage to Barbie, and from there, it was full speed ahead. He and his assistants looked for Black-owned fashion designers and eventually found Brooklyn-based Fe Noel, who created a silky, pink, ’90s Barbie-inspired dress for Aina.

The look, which the designer described as the “perfect mashup of glamour meets girl next door,” to fashion website Women’s Wear Daily, received acclaim from Vogue magazine.

‘Sporting Fashion’ showcases the evolution of women and sportswear [Unscripted column] | Entertainment

With so much heartbreaking news and so many head-smacking decisions, is there space to consider the history of women’s sportswear?

Yes.

I’ve found “Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls 1800 to 1960” to be not just a comforting distraction from the latest pandemic surge, but a look at how style, gender and women’s sports have evolved. There’s so much virtual programming that I almost don’t mind not seeing it in person at The Frick Pittsburgh.

Construction, detail and form aside, these outfits seem like they’re from another planet. There’s an ensemble a woman would wear in the 1890s for mountaineering. Try rock-climbing in a flowy skirt and a shirt with poofy mutton sleeves. To go swimming in the 1900s, don’t forget your personal changing tent that hangs from your neck.

We’ve moved past that era.
