Your Complete Guide to Holiday Shipping Deadlines for 2022 (Updating)
If you shopped during December last year, you probably remember everything being out of stock … and everything taking FOREVER to ship. In fact, you may have been burned by pandemic-related shipping delays to the point where gifts arrived too late for the holidays. The good news is, we’re unlikely to encounter the same chaos we did last year. But retailers still have shipping-cutoffs.
Retailers are starting to confirm their 2022 holiday shipping deadlines. And we’ve also rounded up some last-ditch options for all you procrastinators out there. Missed the deadlines below? There’s still hope, thanks to same-day delivery, offered by some retailers for an extra fee.
- Store Shipping Deadlines
- Carrier Holiday Shipping Deadlines (UPS, USPS, FedEx)
- Buy Online, Pick Up in Store Options
- Faster Shipping Options
- Same-Day Delivery
Our guide to shipping deadlines and free shipping deadlines will help you get your packages on time. Note that there may be some variation — a retailer may have different deadlines for bulky or customized items, for example. We’ve also seen retailers increasingly offer item-by-item shipping dates, rather than uniform shipping cutoffs. So you might not see your specific delivery-date estimates until after you add items to your cart.
How Long is Standard Shipping?
In general, standard shipping takes three to five business days. However, that does NOT include processing time (the time it takes a retailer to pull your item, box it up and send it off). So don’t think for a moment an item ordered exactly five days before Dec. 24 will arrive on time. Retailers need a little lead time (often a day or two, best-case scenario) to ready your order for shipping.
What is Expedited Shipping?
Expedited shipping generally refers to options faster than standard. Depending on the retailer and which shipping company it’s using, this can refer to “express,” “overnight” and “two-day”options. You can often expect to pay an extra fee.
Willing to pay extra for expediting shipping? That might not even be an option this year. We are seeing some major retailers label items with “expedited shipping not available.” So even if you’re willing to pay an upcharge, retailers might not be able to provide speedier shipping options this year.
Store Shipping Deadlines 2022
This year, Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) falls on a Saturday. If you live in an apartment where the package-delivery room is closed on weekends, keep that in mind and build in some extra time.
These deadlines apply to the contiguous United States ONLY.
We’ll be updating this list as more retailers announce their shipping deadlines. In past years, we’ve seen some retailers push back their original deadlines to give shoppers more time, so check back.

Buy Online, Pick Up in Store Options
If you’re shopping at the last minute but don’t want to shop inside a store, store pickup is a great option. These days, most major retailers offer in-store and curbside pickup options. Each store will have its own polices, but in general, the way it works is: Purchase a product from a store’s site, wait for the retailer to let you know when your item is ready, and go pick it up. Many retailers offer these services same-day, though most will have daily cutoffs. So if you’re shopping at the VERY last minute, make sure it’s not too late to pick up your order before Dec. 25.
The key here is whether or not your item is in stock. If it is, you can generally pick it up a lot sooner — sometimes within hours. Some stores do offer ship-to-store, but this process can take days.
These are just some of the major retailers offering store-pickup options in 2022:
• Apple
• Barnes & Noble
• Bed Bath & Beyond
• Best Buy
• Bloomingdale’s
• CVS
• Dick’s Sporting Goods
• DSW
• Gap
• GameStop
• Home Depot
• JCPenney
• Kmart
• Kohl’s
• Lowe’s
• Macy’s
• Nordstrom
• Office Depot
• PetSmart
• Sam’s Club
• Sears
• Staples
• Target
• Urban Outfitters
• Walgreens
• Walmart
• World Market
Can’t pick up your order yourself? Most stores let you designate a pickup person who can retrieve your items for you.

Free Shipping Day: What It Is and How to Participate
Free Shipping Day typically was a one-day event in mid-December, marking the order deadline for on-time delivery by Dec. 25. It was a great day to finish last-minute holiday shopping, save money on shipping and steer clear of the crowds by shopping online. But in 2019, Free Shipping Day was canceled due to so many retailers running free shipping all year round. It remained cancelled in 2020 and 2021, likely due to shipping complications caused by COVID-19. We don’t expect Free Shipping Day to take place in 2022.
