Duke’s Nursery – Baby Nursery Ideas, Furniture, & Decor
These photos were taken at the beginning of August when our sweet little Duke was only a month old, we were living in California and just about to start packing up our lives and moving cross country. Despite all the changes in our lives, it was such a dream to create this beautiful space to utilize and bring with us.
As you know, my dear friend, Anne Sage is the vision behind the space. I am lucky enough to have her as a friend AND as the designer for the spaces in our home. She helped to create our master bedroom, Otis’ nursery, and our living room and dining room spaces. Each of our rooms all flow together but have their own unique voices. What I love about working with Anne is that we both have a very similar aesthetic and compliment each other well because I am someone who also knows what they want. Anne is also a mother to a sweet little girl so I know she GETS it when it comes to creating a space for little ones and brings an elevated fresh spin to kids spaces.
For the main “bones” of the room we used all pieces from Room & Board. We have a lot of their pieces throughout our home already and when it comes to design and great quality, this is it. I also love that all their pieces are made in the USA. As all the rooms in our home, we wanted a more elevated and chic feel despite it being a room for a child. We picked pieces that will grow with Duke and transform as his needs change from baby to toddler. Since you know I love neutrals, we wanted this room to still have a different feel than Otis’ nursery. The crib and dresser color still feel neutral enough but give it a little bit of spice. I especially love Room & Board dressers which are really built to last. They are sturdy (we have one in our bedroom that has withstood Blake’s usage if you watch my ig stories!!) so I know it will hold up well over time with little hands. I am counting down the days till I can lay Duke to sleep in his new crib!!! Also to note I bought a newton mattress which is one of my favorite NEW items I got for Duke that I didn’t have for Otis. It’s 100% breathable and washable with a waterproof lining. We have actually gotten a second one for our temp living situation and use it currently and LOVE it.
The other main show stopper in the room: the rug. This rug is from The Citizenry which make some of my favorite baskets and decor towels. All their stuff is beautiful but wow. This rug is next level. It’s so soft and adds such a fun level of texture to the room. A soft cozy carpet was on the top of my list since I envision lots of time sitting on the ground in here with Duke.
Artwork is always another big project in the room. We got all the pieces from Minted because they have such a great range of pieces, lots of sizing and also a ton of framing options for those pieces. We kept with the beach vibes and moments of calm. Duke was named after the song Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder because it was one of Otis’ fav songs to dance to but Duke also gives me all the beach and surf vibes so this was a great way to mimic this tone in the space.
The little toy shelf is such a sweet little moment for toys, books and displaying those precious little things we have collected over time. Love that it is open so easy to display things or conceal like we did here with these adorable pehr baskets. I also collected some of these wooden pieces and love seeing them have a space for Duke to reach for them and play.
On the dresser, I have my hatch grow changing pad which I LOVED with Otis because it’s easy to wipe down and it has a scale inside you can use with an app. The photo was also such a special addition to the room. How beautiful is this amber hued glass lamp? Perfect for those late night diaper changes.
For Duke’s chair, we lucked out that the fabric we loved was an actual IN STOCK fabric. I know times are wild now ordering pieces so we made sure all the items we loved were in stock choices and that paid off in me having a complete room for when Duke arrived. The chair swivels and rocks which is great for nursing and feeding. I always love having a side table to pop my coffee or water on and love this modern shape. It’s so tiny and adorable.
When I look through photos of this space, I just can’t help but get teary. We fought to have Duke through countless IVF efforts (which you can read about here) and to be able to bring my sweet little man into this space was a dream come true. I am going to be ear to ear smiles when I get to unpack Duke’s room in our new home and set it up like nothing has changed except for the fact I will have a 8 month old baby when I move into our home and have his nursery set up. WILD!!! Time is so precious and I am so thankful to have this little oasis for Duke to watch him continue to grow in. My boys rooms are my favorite in the whole house. They are my whole world. What are your favorite pieces of our nursery?
